THE English New year is just round the corner and everyone is busy working out schedules to welcome it. The New Year is the best time to forget about our failures and start afresh. It gives us an opportunity to make a new beginning. In Bangladesh we enjoy two new years - Bangla and English New Year and we all look forward to celebrating both. Although Bangla New Year is more festive, colourful and more widely celebrated in our country, it is unfortunate that a section of people gets wild and behaves rowdily during the celebrations.
Like every year this year also the law enforcers will also be on high alert to make sure that the celebrations were peaceful and buoyant. One of the steps the police have already taken is restriction on organizing any open air programme. It is sad that we are being deprived of a festive occasion due to the unruly and chaotic behaviour of a section of people. It is also unfortunate that we could have done so many good things on this night, like enjoying open air drama, musical performance, charity night for the poor etc. But instead, the people are locked inside their houses due only to the rowdy behaviour of a few people. I hope from this year on, we shall be able to celebrate the English New Year night in a peaceful and festive manner.
